The well-known, highly respected owner of Wagga funeral home Alan Harris McDonald and Co. died in tragic circumstances on Sunday.
Andrew, 38, leaves behind wife of 13 years, Virginia, and his young children Amelia, 10, Patrick, 8, and Eloise, 5.
Born and bred in Wagga, Andrew had a passion for the funeral industry and viewed his work as a privilege rather than a job.
Younger brother Peter Fitzgerald described him as a hard worker and a man who loved his family.
"He helped a lot of people during their time of need and he was well-respected for that," Peter said.
"We're absolutely devastated at what's happened; to wake up to that news (yesterday) morning."
Peter said despite the difficult circumstances, the family had been buoyed by a number of phone calls and text messages of support.
"The outpouring of emotion is testament to the person he is and the respect that he was held in," he said.
Away from his role as an undertaker, Andrew was a respected board member of the Murrumbidgee Turf Club (MTC).
MTC president Stuart Lamont said his death would leave a "real void" at the club.
"He had a very good understanding of the Murrumbidgee Turf Club," Mr Lamont said.
"Andrew had plenty of ideas and enthusiasm to encourage young people to attend the races and was a great supporter of the industry in general.
"He was always very willing to volunteer his time around the club."
Andrew was also involved in sporting groups and charities, including a stint in Wagga Takes Two.
Funeral details are yet to be finalised.
