SHANE Day has been identified as the driver of the petrol tanker involved in the horrific accident in Mona Vale earlier this week.
Mr Day, who is originally from Wagga, was educated at Kooringal High School and has since moved to Sydney where he works for Cootes Transport.
The 47-year-old father of two and members of his family all refused to speak to the media yesterday, as investigations into the cause of Tuesday’s tragedy continued.
More than 100 notices for vehicle defects including brake failure and steering faults have been handed to the transport company since the out-of-control fuel tanker ploughed into a power pole and four cars before erupting in a fireball on Mona Vale Road.
Two men died in the blaze and six other people were taken to hospital.
