COLLINGULLIE-Ashmont-Kapooka has opened the doors to welcome back two club juniors for the upcoming Riverina Football League season.
The Demons will embark on the second week of pre-season training tonight and last year’s RFL grand finalist has welcomed back Matt Lewington and Shane Gow.
The pair of CAK premiership players stuck with the club for its first season in the RFL before they joined Wodonga Raiders and Lockhart respectively.
CAK coach Shane Lenon is happy to have the pair back at Crossroads Oval.
“They’re a couple of local blokes that have come back which is really good,” Lenon said yesterday.
“Matty spent the first half of last season playing first grade with Wodonga Raiders so he should be pretty handy for us on a wing or giving us some run from the backline.
“Gowie will be another midfielder for us.”
The Demons commenced pre-season training last week with three sessions where the numbers were well above 30 each time.
New assistant coach Geoff Spriggs was among the new faces at CAK, along with a number of promising youngsters.
Lenon has high hopes for Lachie Moore, who has crossed over from Wagga Swans, along with Matt Kennedy, Mitch Castles, Tom Byrnes, Kris Lashbrook, Matt Geppert and Nick Perryman.
“We’ve had good numbers, a lot of younger ones,” Lenon said.
“If we’re going to improve that’s where the improvement will come from because we certainly haven’t gone out and recruited a lot.”
Spriggs, Gow and Lewington are the Demons’ three recruits to this stage but the club remains in talks with two prospective players.
James Morris (Culcairn) and Matt Withers (retirement) are the Demons’ only two losses.
CAK will play Deniliquin in a trial game on March 16, hopefully at Maher Oval, and is likely to feature in the Charity Shield on March 23.
