ONE of the oldest Australian football clubs in the Riverina is preparing to celebrate a big milestone in 2013.
Mangoplah football club will turn 100 next year and plans are underway to make the birthday a special occasion.
The club was formed in 1912 and played its first official league game in 1913, following a number of practice intra-club games to cement a senior team.
Since then it has been a roller coaster ride for the club, winning 33 senior premierships in its first 80 years including eight consecutive flags in the 1940s and five between 1923 and 1929.
Mangoplah merged with Cookardinia United in 1955 to become MCU and the new club won the premiership the following season.
In 1995 MCU joined the Riverina Football League and two years later merged again with Eastlakes to become the MCUE Goannas.
This year the club fielded two senior football teams, two under 17 teams and five netball teams.
The entire history of Mangoplah will be on show when the club marks its centenary in April.
On Friday, April 26 the club will have a social golf day at Wagga Country Club to kick off the weekend.
On the Saturday the Goannas will take on Coolamon at Mangoplah Sportsground before dinner and celebrations at Mangoplah Hall that night.
The celebrations will come to a close with brunch on Sunday.
