Over the years doctors Patrick Renshaw and Peter Knight have helped thousands of patients struggle through the dreaded flu season, delivered well over 2000 babies between them, and helped established one of the city’s most respected clinics.
The pair quips that the reason the business partnership has survived more than three decades is because they now work at opposite ends of the sprawling office.
“It’s really great when you think you saw someone as a baby and they’re now grown up and they’re in their 20s or 30s,” says Dr Knight.
On more than one occasion Dr Knight and Dr Renshaw have delivered the baby from a woman they actually saw born decades earlier. They laugh when asked if this makes them feel old. The doctors met at university and established themselves at a clinic on Docker Street before moving to the Peter Street centre in 1990.
Dr Knight has roots firmly in the community, coming from the family of Knight’s Meats fame. Dr Renshaw’s connection to the Riverina stretches back to past generations which called the region home. Dr Renshaw credits mobile phones as the biggest change to his job, saying the days of relying on family members to relay messages are over.
“Someone rang my home once and my son answered the phone and directed him to the hospital because he thought he was having a heart attack, and he was right,” he says.
The doctors have seen their roles change a number of times over the years as medical specialists come to the city, and they have no plans to hang up the stethoscope just yet.
“Who knows? I’m working on for a while and so is Peter,” said Dr Renshaw.
“We hope we don’t get tapped on the shoulder any time soon,” he added with a laugh.
