Katie Anne Barnett faced Wagga’s Local Court for sentencing on Wednedsay after she was convicted of three charges: supplying a prohibited drug, knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime, and possessing both a prohibited drug and the equipment required to administer it.
However, it was only the last of those three charges that the Local Court was able to sentence her for, with the severity of the other two charges landing Barnett with a ticket to the District Court.
The court heard that Barnett was in possession of “a reasonably large quantity of methylamphetamine”, but had been working to address her drug problem since the incident.
Barnett entered into a residential rehabilitation program in November, which she recently completed, and presented a letter from Calvary to the court to speak to the progress she had made.
Barnett is now participating in a rehabilitation day program in an effort to transition back into the community.
Local Court magistrate Erin Kennedy said she recognised Barnett’s commitment to her rehabilitation.
“It sounds to me very much like you are mending and you’re going through that process at the moment – and you’re very successful doing so,” Ms Kennedy said.
“I think you have a lot to add to the community once you are mended.”
Ms Kennedy sentenced Barnett to a 12-month good behaviour bond for possessing an illicit substance and the equipment needed to administer it.
Barnett is due to appear before the court again on June 29, when a District Court sentencing date will be set for her two more serious convictions.
