UPDATE: Police have confirmed this morning the body of the missing 28-year-old swimmer was found at around 6.20am.
Volunteers from the VRA were canvassing the river from 6am when they found the man deceased.
The NSW Ambulance rescue team used a specialised raft to remove the body, which has been transported to Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital and is waiting identification.
“The matter is currently being investigated and a report will be prepared for the coroner in regards to the cause of death and whether there are any other factors relating to his disappearance in the river on Sunday night,” Acting Inspector Nigel Turney said.
Inspector Turney said there was “nothing suspicious” at this stage.
“There were other witnesses on the night who saw him in distress, calling out for assistance, it’s just one of those unfortunate circumstances where he chose to swim in the river at the wrong time.”
The man’s defacto partner and parents are reportedly coping well and have been assisting police.
The Westpac rescue helicopter was deployed immediately to Albury this morning to search for a 24-year-old man missing in Lake Hume.
“It’s just another example of where people are using the waterways they need to take extreme care… there’s hidden objects, rocks, logs, that can be under the surface that they cannot see when they go into the water,” Inspector Turney said.
Police could not confirm whether the man was injured when he entered the river.
EARLIER: The body of a man believed to be that of a 28-year-old swimmer missing since Sunday has been found this morning.
He was located near the Wiradjuri Boat Ramp, approximately two kilometres from where he was last seen.
The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter tweeted about 9.15am on Thursday that the body had been located and the aircraft was being deployed to Albury.
Wagga Police are set to hold a press conference at 11am.
The man was last seen about 8.45pm on Sunday when he was seen entering the river.
He did not resurface.
His friend and housemate Tiffany Cunningham said he had only moved to Wagga in September with his partner and children from South Australia.
“All he wanted to do was jump into the river and cool down because it was so hot – he wasn’t even two metres from the edge,” she said.
Detectives from Wagga Local Area command will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death on behalf of the coroner.
