#Throwback to the The Daily Advertiser on January 1 to 12, 1997

For Wagga residents in January 1998 it was time for reflection and resolutions – another year to start all over again.

HSC results were making headlines as high school students received their scores and happy or disappointed with the outcome, The Daily Advertiser was there to capture it all.

It wasn’t all about achievement though, as crime rocked the city.

On January 1 a pair of con artists scammed their way through Wagga Marketplace, stealing cash from at least five stores.

The tragic death of a Yerong Creek farmer in a freak accident rocked the city shortly after on January 3.

Twelve teachers were made redundant at Junee Correctional Centre to allow for a private contractor to take over the education program.

Drama again hit Wagga Marketplace as hundreds were evacuated after a small fire in an electrical substation triggered a power failure.

But above all, residents spent the first days of January cooling off at Wagga Beach.
