Wagga man Ian Begg was selected by Games organisers to carry the baton, in recognition of his tireless community work.
“It’s really exciting. About once a week in January we will get notifications from where we are going to run, we will get our uniforms in the second week, a final check on the 19th and then ready to go on the 28th,” Mr Begg said.
“Along with the other nominees, I will be running 250 metres, and they’ve allowed us three hours to run that stretch, which was a bit of a shock. But I have no doubt we will easily clear that, just hope it’s not up a hill.”
Wagga mayor Greg Conkey said it was a great honour to be the first regional city area in NSW to have the Queen’s baton relay pass through.
“It’s very exciting for the city and the community will be able to see the baton bearers carry it on January 28 when the rally starts at Bolton Park, then heads up Tarcutta Street before the Queen’s baton makes its way by car to Narrandera,” Councillor Conkey said.
