Harley Reace Bevan, 17, appeared in Wagga Local Court on Wednesday, pleading guilty to taking part in a street race and driving at a dangerous speed on October 25.
According to documents tendered to the court, Bevan raced through 50km/h zones in Coleman and Edmondson streets, past Kildare Catholic College at varying high-speeds, as children walked on the side of the road.
Magistrate Erin Kennedy told Bevan, as a parent, it was terrifying to hear about the children present at the incident.
“Imagine if one of them (the children) didn’t get to go home that day,” she said.
“I spoke with a young man the other day who only has one leg after a moment of madness – speeding again – and that was the outcome.”
Ms Kennedy told Bevan to use his lesson and educate his peers on the dangers of street racing.
“I never want you to forget this – there’s nothing wrong with being the person who says ‘hey that’s not on’,” she said.
Solicitor Jane Murray, who represented Bevan, told the court her client was extremely sorry for his actions.
“He is aware of how serious it is but knows it could’ve been more, he realises he could’ve killed himself or other road users,” Ms Murray said.
“He is quite afraid of the consequences and is willing to do anything.”
Bevan was fined $1000, disqualified from driving for two years and was ordered to complete 250 hours of community service.
