That’s where Wagga girl Sharlette Bourke is different.
Sharlette intends to lose her long locks in March next year, raising more than $10,000 for the World’s Greatest Shave.
She is fundraising to help find a cure for leukaemia.
“It was to support my cousin after finding out that she was sick,” Sharlette said.
“Fortunately, the results came back negative for leukaemia … it still affects so many people.”
The Sturt Public School student has already raised $3000 but has a long way to go to reach her goal.
As part of her latest fundraiser, Sharlette is selling $20 tickets to the premier of Pitch Perfect 3 on Monday, January 1.
“By simply saying to your friends or colleagues: ‘Oh my god. Have you heard about Sharlette shaving her hair off’, you are helping spread the word,” Sharlette said.
“I have raised my bar very high and I would be very grateful for any support and help.”
The 12-year-old said she didn’t see losing her hair as a bad thing.
“It’s helping those who have cancer and those who are researching to help them with a treatment,” Sharlette said.
“As it grows back I’ll get to find out how I like it.”
Natalie Bourke said she was proud of her daughter’s decision, following her own sister’s “Great Shave”, several years ago.
“There aren’t many teenagers who would start high school with no hair,” Ms Bourke said. “Especially a defence child, who moves around a lot.”
