Police were called to the Locomotive Hotel on Hill Street about 9.45am on Tuesday after reports a 51-year-old man was armed with a number of weapons.
Officers from Wagga Wagga Local Area Command attended, however, the man barricaded himself inside the hotel.
Due to concerns for the man’s welfare and for public safety, a perimeter was established and students went into lockdown at a nearby primary school.
Police negotiators and the State Protection Support Unit were called to the scene.
The man spent the night on the hotel’s rooftop before giving himself up about 9am on Wednesday after almost 24 hours.
Police confirmed that the man was shot with a so-called “bean bag round” at some point during the operation.
After being treated by paramedics at the scene, the man was transported to hospital for assessment, with initial reports pointing to dehydration.
However, The Daily Advertiser understands that doctors performed surgery on his spleen, which was damaged from the bean bag round.
On Friday, he was charged at his bedside with threatening injury to a person with intent to prevent lawful detention, being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, malicious damage, assaulting police and breaching of bail.
The man was refused bail and will remain under police guard in hospital.
In a statement, NSW Police said a critical incident team is investigating all circumstances surrounding the incident and that the investigation will be subject to independent review.
