Pittsburgh was opened up as the $4.20 favourite with TAB for Friday’s $70,000 Snake Gully Cup (1400m) at Gundagai.
The exciting four-year-old is also down to run at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
McCarthy will run Pittsburgh at whatever track is driest and will wait until Friday morning to make the decision.
“The weather is the biggest issue,” McCarthy said.
“He’s a really, really good horse on top of the ground and has been showing us lots and lots on top of the ground.
“As soon as there is any sting out of the ground, he doesn’t want to go.
“We’re 50-50 at the moment. He’ll run where it is driest.”
Adelaide visitor So Skilled is already scratched, while Ruthless Agent is unlikely to run.
Canberra three-year-old Up Trumpz, the third emergency, would gain a start if Pittsburgh is also scratched.
