The former Forest Hill man said the camaraderie he found at the local RSL helped him through what was a trying time.
Mr Randal said he hoped to bring his wife, who was in respite care, to the club’s 70th birthday celebrations on Friday, November 17.
Mr Randal was the 185th member to sign up to the Wagga RSL Club, following its launch in 1947. He said it was “the best thing that ever happened to Wagga”.
The couple will join more than 500 residents at a Party on the Greens, which will feature free family-friendly entertainment from 4pm.
Since its inception – separate to the RSL Sub Branch – the Wagga club has grown to support 138 community groups, with more than 22,800 members, becoming one of the top 75 clubs in the state.
General manager Andrew Bell said the RSL club was like a second lounge room for members.
Boasting a rich history of community support, the 70-year-old institution donated almost half a million dollars to causes across the city, in the last financial year.
“Members support us and we support them,” Mr Bell said. “We really try had to be a good part of the community.”
