A Men’s Health Education Rural Van (MHERV) has been parked in the car park of the Wagga Bunnings store on Tuesday and again on Wednesday, between 10am and 4pm, to encourage men to have some simple health screenings.
The purpose-built caravan has two consulting rooms and is currently touring 56 centres in NSW between August 2017 and May 2018, with a full-time registered nurse, Nicole Page.
Ms Page is helped by community nurses in each community that is visited to conduct the tests on rural men.
The van is sponsored by Rotary – and its Wagga visit by Wolundry Rotary – and is also open to women if this wish to use the services.
Visiting patients are screened for high cholesterol, blood sugars and blood pressure.
They are given copies of their results from the tests to take with them, so they are able to follow-up with their GP if necessary.
