Police are investigating in the wake of Monday’s shocking high-speed crash that claimed the life of a 53-year-old Wagga man
The man died after a blue Holden Commodore bearing P-plates slammed into his Ford ute around 10am on Coleman Street in Turvey Park.
The impact of the crash saw the two vehicles travel up to another 30 metres down the road before coming to rest outside the KU Kookaburra preschool.
Witnesses say the blue Commodore looked like it was involved in a street race with another car, and was trying to overtake another car when it collided with the ute.
It took the Wagga Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) almost an hour to free people trapped in the wreckage.
The 53-year-old man was transported to Wagga Rural Referral Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The three occupants of the sedan – two 21-year-old men and a 20-year-old man – were also taken to hospital.
It is understood the three had been at a tertiary course at the opposite end of Coleman Street before the crash.
They were all listed as remaining in a stable condition on Tuesday morning.
The state’s Crash Investigation Unit was on the Coleman Street scene gathering evidence until reopening the road early Monday evening.
Investigators took measurements, photographs and detailed the events that related to the two-car accident.
The expert team conducted a series of controlled speed stops to help clarify the exact speed the cars were travelling to cause the crash, and the condition of the road which saw the ute pushed so far forward following impact.
A coronial report into the crash is being prepared.
