The School for Seniors is struggling with low attendance numbers, according to publicity officer Mary Kidson, who is worried the community will lose a valuable asset.
“It’s just so marvellous. There's no homework, no assignments. Just opening your mind up,” Mrs Kidson said.
“it’s centrally placed, which is important for people who don’t drive any longer.
“We try to make it as fun as possible, but now we’ve got to revive it a bit.”
Mrs Kidson believes the school fills an important role in providing not only a social outlet, but also helping older people remain engaged with their community and mentally stimulated.
“This valuable service for older residents has offered a range of experience of an educational, entertaining and social nature,” she said.
“It was set up under the umbrella of the Uniting Church as part of its ethos of community service.
“Any older person can become a member of the school and can enrol for one term or all four terms.
"No prerequisites are needed; just enthusiasm and being willing to get involved in any of the activities on offer. In the past we have offered creative writing, public speaking and craft and art activities.”
Currently the school is offering ballroom dancing and current affairs.
Mrs Kidson said the school had heard from a range of guest speakers offering advice and opinions on a broad range of topics.
Wagga mayors and regional parliamentarians have addressed the school, as have representatives from a variety of community and government groups.
Mrs Kidson said the speakers were all thoughtfully selected so their addresses would be relevant to the audience.
“With more numbers it should be possible to offer a wider range of interesting topics in a stimulating and enthusiastic atmosphere,” Mrs Kidson said.
“If numbers continue to decline, it may not be possible to continue with a very enjoyable service.”
The school’s fees are $12 a term, and include morning tea. The school is held at the Uniting Church on the corner of Johnston and Tarcutta streets.
