Police admit the discovery of a home-made bomb took them by surprise during a search of a Langham Street house in Ganmain.
The search warrant was executed on Wednesday afternoon, primarily after police suspected the house contained illegal plants.
While police removed a number of items from the house, the Sydney Bomb Squad was immediately deployed after lunch but distance and heavy Sydney traffic almost caused a problem.
Due to strict court procedures surrounding search warrants, police had until 9pm on Wednesday to complete the search and leave the premises.
Wagga and Temora police removed items from the house as the bomb squad had driven directly from Sydney to arrive at Ganmain just before 8.30pm.
At 8.53pm, with just seven minutes to spare, they had defused and removed the home-made bomb and exited the premises.
A 27-year-old Ganmain man was charged with six offences relating to the home-made bomb, plus drug and ammunition charges.
