The Demons trailed by a goal at half-time but made the most of a strong breeze in the third term on their way to an important win, 8.16 (64) to 7.9 (51) at Exies Oval.
Both teams went into the clash without a number of key personnel, but the Swans took it right up to the ladder leaders in the first half.
The Demons didn’t use the breeze well in the opening term, before Griffith responded with four goals to one to head into the main break six points clear.
Collingullie-GP didn’t make the same mistakes in the third term, as they lowered their eyes and used the football much better.
Five unanswered goals put the Demons 28 points clear. Griffith managed the only two goals of the final term but it was not enough as Collingullie-GP held on to earn an important four points on the road.
Collingullie-GP captain-coach Luke Gestier said the third quarter proved decisive in the result.
“It was tough conditions but the pleasing part was the third quarter,” Gestier said.
“I put in on the boys, challenged them and they responded.
“We had the wind, but as I said to the boys, that doesn’t do the work for you. Our pressure and tackling was really good, which was good.”
Gestier wasn’t raving about his team’s performance but was pleased to come home with a valuable four points.
“It’s always tough to go over there and get the points so it’s good,” he said.
“I know they had a few out, but so did we. It was very much a danger game so it’s good to get through.
“For us to come over here and really grind out a win, it doesn’t matter if it was by one goal or six goals, it’s good to get the win.”
It was not a day for stand outs, but Brad Aiken continued his good form for the Demons. Matt Klemke and Jayden Klemke were also good.
Ed Perryman made his senior debut and also contributed in the win.
“It was a well rounded effort. Everyone chipped in and put their head over the footy when they had to,” Gestier said.
Lucas Conlan was strong in defence for Griffith, while Ben King, Mick Duncan and James Toscan also tried hard.
Collingullie-GP have the bye next week, before the top of the table clash against Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes. They will get Steve Jolliffe and Dan Kennedy back for that.
Griffith will welcome back Will Griggs, Jordan Iudica, Jacob Conlan and Richard Malone for the trip to take on Wagga Tigers.
