Griffith High School's Apenisa Driti selected for Australia Schools Barbarians.

The side was selected following the Australian Schools Championship where Apenisa was representing NSW.

Although the front rower was excited to be selected, he knows he could have performed better.

“I don't think I played at my best,” he said.

“It will be a great experience to play with the Schoolboys.

“I will get to see the lifestyle that they live because we will be in camp for three weeks.”

This is a first for Griffith High to have a student picked while still attending the school and deputy principal Richard Wiseman felt it was a fantastic achievement for someone from Griffith.

“Some of the other players on his team have 100s of thousands invested in their rugby program and for Apinisa to get to where he is absolutely fantastic,” he said.

“It doesn't guarantee future success but the path is certainly open for him and we are really proud of that Australian selection.”

Wiseman felt Apenisa might have been a harsh critic with his performance because he received attention from high places.

“I saw Apenisa play on the last day of the carnival where he said he didn't have his best,” he said.

“I know personally there were people from NSW Rugby that contacted me. 

“They are very impressed with him and he had quite a few people interested. What he did was he added a lot of go forward when he came on.

“Potential-wise, he has everything in front of him.”

Both Wiseman and Apinisa finished by thanking the Griffith Blacks Rugby Union and Black and Whites Rugby League Club who helped him get to this stage.

Apinisa will head off to take on New Zealand and Fiji School in October.
