The Bulls will be without Pani Manawatu for the clash with Albury at Harris Park on Sunday.
McCarthy claimed the 2011 Weissel Medal in the role and captain-coach Nick Skinner is confident he’ll ease back into the role.
“He actually plays pretty good as hooker so we are pretty lucky to have the luxury with Pani away to have him there," Skinner said.
It means Thomas Besgrove will remain the halves, but will switch to halfback after covering five-eighth for Nathan Rose back from representative duties.
Rose is back for the Bulls as is lock Jordan Shepherd.
With Shepherd returning from a hand injury it means Skinner goes back into the front row.
With Albury coming off a loss to Kangaroos last week, Skinner expects to tackle a fired up Thunder.
“They are going to be tough especially after having a loss last week,” he said.
