Students from The Riverina Anglican College visited the Early Years Learning Centre (EYLC) in Boorooma to share this year’s book, The Cow Tripped Over The Moon.
Lucy Pilon, 4, loved the book. She also likes fairy stories, and enjoys reading “because you see pictures”.
Her reader, 17-year-old Sarah Price, studied Community and Family Studies in year 9 and 10 at TRAC. She hopes to one day work in primary or early childhood and encourages anyone who likes kids to get involved.
“It’s really great that around the country everyone’s reading the same book and it really helps with their literacy,” she says.
The annual initiative sees kids nationwide settle down for a story at the same time, promoting reading and literacy. It’s now in its 17th year.
Wagga’s EYLC have been participating in the program for years, and make an effort to get the wider community involved.
Kelly Fuller, educator at EYLC said: “The children are always excited to have the big kids coming to play.”
The event is run by the Australian Library and Information Association. Over 520,000 children took part last year.
