The Bushpigs took control either side of half-time to lead by 25 points heading into the final quarter, but when Barellan had Will Overs go forward it was suddenly game on.
“They kicked four goals on the trot (to get within two points),” CSU coach Daniel Athanitis said.
“They’re really improved. Jacko (Barellan coach Darren Jackson) has got them going really well. They were probably a bit stiff not to win.”
But the Bushpigs found the goal they needed to get over the line, hanging on to win 10.4 (64) to 9.3 (57).
Liam Sweeney led the scoring with four goals while the consistent Diarmid Cleary, across half-back, and Rob Herzfeld in the middle, were CSU’s best in an important win for the club.
“I was really happy with the result considering we had a few changes,” Athanitis said, referring to a handful of injuries and a suspension.
“So yeah it was a good win from our point of view, we thought. We got some games into a few blokes that probably haven’t played a lot of senior footy as well.”
Will Overs was outstanding for Barellan while Mal Fernie was also impressive and kicked three goals.
