Billy Seton, Allen Shaw, Warren Charlton and Sean Smith were a dominate force over Rules Club beating Barry Belt’s team 34-17. From the outset Junee controlled the match leading 18-2 after eight ends. Belt reduced the margin from 19 to 9. During the final seven ends, Junee scored an impressive 14 to 4.
Roy Buckley, Noel Lawson, Craig Shaw and Martin Cousley started just as strong against Rules Club, skippered by Allan Leonard to hold a seven shot lead after five ends. Junee extended its lead 18-7 but a 13-shot to two run by Rules Club tied the match at 20. The Cousley quartet closed 7 to 1 over the final four ends to win 27-21.
Brett Fanning skippered the most experienced rink of Martin Holmes, Bryan Purse and Ian Cooper. Playing against Paul Fitzgerald, Fanning’s team didn’t start as strong as hoped, trailing by two shots after seven ends. An eight shot run over the next three ends by Junee turned a two shot deficit into a six shot lead, but Rules went on a seven shot run to take back the lead with eight ends to go. During the final ends both traded shots with the match ending 20-all.
Junee won the pennant with a total score of 81 to 58.
Fifth Grade finished half-a-point behind RSL after the regular season and had to play well to win the pennant.
Jack Cousley, Jeff Chisholm, Roy Woodall & John Puttock started in the best possible fashion scoring a five on the first end and extended the lead to eight shots after seven ends. Dick White’s RSL were fighting back when disaster happened when they dropped a seven shot thirteenth end and Junee lead 20-10 with eight ends to play. During the final ends both scored shots, but the Puttock four won the match 26-15.
Jake Hersant, Jed Passlow, David Billingham and Kel Seton played Mark Evans of RSL and were in control early leading 9-4 after seven ends. RSL reduced the margin to three to trail 15-12 and in the final phase, Junee were in control, to win 20-16.
Doug Gee, Jarrod Smith, Corey Hazell and Rob Minister played Peter Haby of RSL and it did not start how they hoped dropping the first three ends to trail 6-0, but a five-shot sixth end put Junee back into the match, trailing by one shot 7-6. Minister made a tactical error and gave up four shots for RSL to lead 16-9, but Junee rallied back, scoring nine unanswered shots to lead 18-16. With the overall results favouring Junee, RSL threw the cat among the pigeons with beautiful conversion play from skipper Haby and scored 10 in three ends.
For Junee the individual match was lost, but it was all about the main board with Junee holding an eight shot lead with two ends to play. It was not going well on Minister’s rink on the last end when RSL were holding five shots with one Junee bowl to play. With their game gone it was about the big board and Minister played the best draw ball of his life and drew the shot to secure overall victory, 65 to 57.
