The candidates represent a diverse range of rural industries and span from West Wyalong to Hay. Voting opened this week and enrolled ratepayers have until May 31 to vote. Ratepayers will elect three local board members.
RIVERINA CANDIDATES
- Paul Funnell runs an irrigation and mixed farming property at Collingullie. He believes it is critical to address the issues directly affecting ratepayers. Mr Funnell is a current Wagga councillor and deputy chairman of Riverina Water, a former chairman of the flood risk advisory board.
- Mal Carnegie lives in the Lake Cowal district to the north of West Wyalong and has been involved in agriculture and natural resource management for 30 years. He is currently the projects manager for the Lake Cowal Foundation, a not-for-profit environmental trust. He is a current member of the Lach Landcare Executive Committee and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
- Benjamin Egge says he is aware of the issues of farming in the Riverina. I share the concerns of farm managers and will seek to be a proactive voice of the farmer on the board. As a farm owner I see the need for infrastructure and feral species assistance as a higher priority for government to address. I will be a vocal board member who highlights the farmers and landowners needs.
- John Davey is a farmer and veterinarian at Ariah Park and is a current board member of the Riverina LLS. I have previously been a director on the Wagga Rural Lands Protection Board and the Hume Livestock Health and Protection Authority. In the period from 1986 to 1988 I was the district veterinarian at Hay.
- Helen Dalton, a dryland and irrigation farmer is re-applying for a board position. She is a former Nuffield Scholar and has been a member of the NSW Farmers Executive Council and also sits on the Conservation and Natural Resource Management Committee (CRM) and the Presidential Water Taskforce. In 2012, she was appointed as a director of NSW Farmers.
- Peter Speirs OAM has farmed in the Wagga and Temora districts and has 40 years as an elected representative in Local Government. He was a LLS Riverina Local Land Services Elected Board Member from 2014 – 2017 and was presented with OAM in 2008, for service to the community through Local Government.
- Tom Murdoch runs a self-replacing Merino flock and crops at West Wyalong. He has been active in the community for 30 years holding roles including Mandamaha RFS Secretary, member of the West Wyalong Breeders Association, Trustee of the Ariah Park Showground past president of Ariah Park Show and board member of Condobolin RLPB plus board member of Lachlan LHPA.
- Alanna Barrett farms at Mangoplah, Her industry experience includes working with Meat and Livestock Australia on the Sheep Genetics Program (LAMBPLAN/MERINOSELECT). She also worked in a private Ag consultancy practice in Wagga, broadening her skills in livestock to include the management of both broadacre and irrigated cropping programs. She is also chairwoman of the Eastern Riverina Landcare Network, and for the past four years held a committee position with the Wagga Young Professionals in Agriculture’ network (YPIA).
- Boo Harvey runs a beef cattle business at “South Bri-Bri,” Gunbar. The majority of her breeding stock are run on agistment properties and TSRs have also been used extensively. She has held roles with JBS Australia, National Australia Bank Agribusiness Department and NSW Agriculture. She has an Agricultural Science degree and a Diploma in Agribusiness Administration plus a Stock and Station, ALFA Animal Welfare Officer Certificate, MSA Producer Accreditation, Livestock Producer Assurance Scheme, Aus-meat Non-Packer Exporters Accreditation, Aus-meat National Feedlot Accreditation.
- Allison Appleby is a science teacher and has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Equine Studies); Graduate Certificate in Agriculture; Graduate Diploma of Education (Science); Graduate Certificate in Science Relative Employment Experience. She has experience as manager of a horse agistment business and was an education officer with the Catchment Management Authority.
- Lisa Anderson runs mixed farming venture at “Elwood”, The Gap with her husband Kerry and holds a Bachelor of Economics 1991; Bachelor of Laws 1993. (Sydney University). She is also a director of FarmLink Research. She has worked as a solicitor in the Riverina region for 18 years.
- Peter Bonaventura is co-owner and Managing director of communications company Venture Access Pty Limited, Griffith. He has worked extensively the horticulture, rice, cotton and dryland agricultural sectors. He has an IT and accounting background.
- Vivien Thomson farms at Muttama and has held board positions including Local Land Service Riverina Highland’s Advisory Committee, Southern Ranges NP&WS Board, former president Australian Women in Agriculture, National Rural Women’s Coalition Award. She was a NSW RIRDC Rural Women’s Award Runner up.
