Angland tries to return home every year for the Gold Cup and enjoyed one of his best carnivals with five winners.
Angland’s fifth win came courtesy of Viceroy ($3.10) in the Toyota Material Handling Australia Class Three Handicap (1000m).
Angland was pleased with his performance in front of his home crowd at Wagga.
“It’s good, obviously being from here, coming home in front of family and friends it’s pretty special to win that many,” Angland said.
Viceroy, a four-year-old Magnus gelding, was having his first start for Canberra trainer Luke Pepper after being purchased in February.
Pepper has had Viceroy in work for 10 weeks and was rapt to see him come out and win.
“It was impressive, I’m really happy with him,” Pepper said.
“He’s impressed me at home, it’s great, he’s really blossomed.
“He’s got good form in Melbourne, solid city form, so I thought if he brought that today then he would be hard to beat in a class three.
“I think he’ll win in town.”
Angland was also taken by the win.
“It was solid, and he still had plenty left,” he said.
Viceroy ran down Dollyu’s Due ($3.50) to win by three lengths in a slick time of 57.07 seconds.
The Trevor Sutherland-trained Oh What A Thief finished fifth.
Wodonga visitor Cagney ($4.80) was third.
