The Freedman stable is set to launch a four-pronged attack on the Wagga Gold Cup carnival, headlined by Cool Chap in the $150,000 Wagga Gold Cup (2000m).
Freedman won his first Wagga Gold Cup way back in 1989 when Darren Gauci piloted Abstraction to victory.
Cool Chap is a group one placegetter and ran second at his past two starts in the Canberra and Albury Cups.
Freedman, in training partnership with his brother Anthony, will also bring group three winner Santa Ana Lane for the $110,000 Wagga Town Plate (1200m) on Thursday.
The Freedman stable’s racing manager, Brad Taylor, confirmed the trip to Wagga.
“At this stage, we’ll have four coming up,” Taylor said.
“It’s good prizemoney, especially with the two-year-old bonus there as well.”
Taylor expects Cool Chap to be a major player in the Gold Cup.
“Country cups are his go, he’s performed well in these types of races and should be pretty competitive up there,” he said.
“He’ll probably have a jump out on Friday in preparation for the Cup, we’ll just wait and see what the weather’s like over the next couple of days.”
The Freedman stable are on the hunt for a dry track with Santa Ana Lane.
“He’s been finding wet tracks and we’re trying to dodge them,” Taylor said.
“He’s been working really well and we’re happy with him.”
Freedman’s other two runners will be three-year-old filly Exocet in the $80,000 MTC Guineas and unbeaten two-year-old Grandioso.
“Exocet ran fourth at Sandown last start and needs the mile now,” Taylor said.
“Grandioso won on debut at Bendigo and the two-year-old race, with the bonus, suits him well. Plus the trip away often does the younger horses a lot of good.”
Nominations for the two big days close on Friday.
The Wagga track has received 29 millimetres of rain since Friday and has moved just into the heavy range.
