The Greens have drawn with Cootamundra plus tasted two narrow defeats at home to start the year.
While Byatt was hoping to have a lot more to show from the first three rounds, he doesn’t think they are too far off tasting success.
“A win is only just around the corner,” Byatt said.
“All three games we’ve been right in them but we are just killing ourselves at the moment.
“That is all it is.
“We seem to just throw it away for some reason.
“I can’t just work it out at the moment.”
Starting the season with a 12-point loss at home to Tumut, the Greens drew with Tumbarumba before another loss to Young.
Tumbarumba looked to have be in control against Young at home on Sunday before stumbling late.
Byatt thought they let the two points slip after giving up a 16-4 lead to go down 20-16.
“We definitely let one slip as the game was ours for the taking, especially we went up by a couple of tries,” he said.
“Silly drop balls near the end really cost us a lot and silly penalties.
“There was no one else to blame but ourselves.”
Making the finals were a focus for Byatt and despite only earning one point from three very winnable games he thinks the team has the talent to do it if they get their attitude right.
“We’ve got to learn to get into the grind when we are winning and put the nail in the coffin,” he said.
“We always seem to be chasing the win we when are in front for a reason.
“We seem to go away from it for when we’ve done all the hard work.
“I thought out of the first four games we’d at least get two or three wins up so it is disappointing but it is definitely there though.”
It makes the clash with Kangaroos on Saturday even more more important.
Byatt is looking to taste success for the first time against the Wagga club at Equex Centre.
The ‘Roos will be without their captain-coach Ben Jeffery, something Byatt believes will be boost.
“Going down there we definitely need to start again,” he said.
Byatt expects to be without second rower Steve Arnold for at least the next month with a shoulder injury, however Fijian recruit Naipolioni Waqanivalu could be right to tackle ‘Roos.
