Humbled by 40 points in the grand final rematch against Waratahs in round one, a fortnight later the Boiled Lollies were back in control, taking a win 48-0 win over CSU.
The Reddies haven’t won for more than a second and will have to wait at least another week after a better display by last year’s grand finalists.
Wagga City coach Michael Kanck thought the team responded well to the footballing lesson dished out in round one.
“It was a much better effort,” Kanck said.
“What we worked on in the last two weeks at training the boys put on the paddock.
“It was a total different mindset that the players went onto the field with and the results showed.”
Wagga City were quick to get on top and continued to accelerate throughout the second half.
The Boiled Lollies took a 17-0 lead into the break before pilling on the points in the second half.
Kanck thought getting the simple things right made a big difference.
“We got back to the basics that we expected to come in the first round,” he said.
“We made amends for that during the week and definitely saw improvement, which was great.”
Dominating in set plays, Wagga City’s scrum performed well but CSU struggled to keep their advantage at the line-out.
With Jayden Stanton in New Zealand for a holidays, Palframann stepped into the five-eighth role.
The club stalwart was one of Wagga City’s best.
“He’s one of more mercurial five-eighths,” Kanck said.
“He generally plays a lot of second grade but he is a quality player who stood up and led well from the front.”
Stanton is expected to be back in the country and available for the clash with Griffith at Exies Oval.
However, Kanck isn’t sure if he’ll come straight back into the starting team.
“We will see how he trains and how he has gotten over his holiday buffet breakfasts and go from there,” he said.
“But he is a quality player and it is good to see in our club that we can fill those positions well with our depth.”
Kanck was also impressed by Nick Gleeson’s first game with the club.
Given the captaincy duties following James Maloney’s injury, the former Griffith hooker led from the front.
Stuart Dyer also showed his class at halfback with his kicking on point for the Boiled Lollies.
While Wagga City head to Griffith, CSU will be looking to end a long winless run against Tumut at Beres Ellwood on Saturday.
Neither team has won yet this season.
