From December 1, new road rules came into effect that provide a timely reminder for P-platers to keep their focus on the road.
New laws prevent P-plate drivers from using any function at all on their mobile phone while driving or riding motorbikes, even when stationary.
On December 1, 2016 changes were introduced that affected learner drivers as well as red and green P-plate drivers.
The changes roll out in two stages, with the first applicable now, and the second in November, 2017. Effective immediately, P2 licence holders will have the same mobile phone restrictions as Learner and P1 licence holders.
This feature is supported by:
P2 holders will no longer be permitted to use a mobile phone at all while driving or riding. Previously P2 licence holders could use mobile phones for calls and audio only, provided the phone was securely mounted, or an automated audio device was used.
From November 2017, there will be changes come into force for learner, P1 and P2 drivers as well.
All learner drivers will be required to pass the Hazard Perception Test to progress to unsupervised driving. This is in addition to the practical, on-road driving test.
P1 licence holders will no longer need to pass the Hazard Perception Test before progressing to a P2 licence.
P2 licence holders will no longer need to pass the Driver Qualification Test before progressing to an unrestricted licence. Visit your state roads services website for details.
