NSW Police have been investigating the feasibility of a secondary lockup in Wagga, sparking a show of solidarity from the community.
Owner of Southcity Takeaway Kathryn Parker – who had a donation tin swiped from the counter of her store – believes a second police station could be the “silver bullet” fix to the city’s crime wave.
“We’d have officers right in the midst of where most of the crime tends to happen,” she said.
“Rather than arriving and taking a report, they’d be fast enough to catch them and remove them from the streets.
“Instead of taking 15 or 20 minutes to respond, they could be there in a matter of minutes.”
A The Daily Advertiser survey revealed readers have overwhelmingly backed the pop-up lockup proposal.
With more than 400 responses, 93 per cent of residents said it should be pursued while just 7 per cent opposed the idea.
Glenfield Park shopper Pauline Harris said the secondary station is a “no-brainer”.
The issue hit close to home for Ms Harris, whose car was stolen by burglars three months ago.
“I think I speak for most of the community when I say that we need to take any chance we can get,” she said.
“This could turn Wagga around.”
However, Superintendent Bob Noble said the popular initiative was not yet on the table because of a shortfall in resources.
