Some 32 players from across the state converged on the city to battle it out for the $500 in prizemoney on offer at Wagga Croquet Club’s ninth annual carnival.
It was an all-Young grand final, where Peter Druett edged out Edna Kelly in the decider to claim the title, and bulk of the prizemoney.
Druett only lost one game in his block and played extremely well to defeat Canberra’s Peter Freer in the semi-final.
Freer and Port Macquarie’s Ken Easton won the doubles, with Yvonne Grattan, of Canberra, and Kaye Moffat, of Albury, finishing runners up.
Tournament manager Robyn Willis said the carnival proved a great success, with players travelling from as far as Wollongong, Forster, Port Macquarie, Canberra and Traralgon to take part.
“All enjoyed the country atmosphere of the Riverina, especially the city visitors,” Willis said.
“The weather was hot and humid for the six games of the Thursday doubles, but a lovely breeze cooled the players over the weekend.”
Freer, also the tournament referee, held a rules session on the Wednesday before the carnival, as well as informing all players of the new handicapping system coming into effect on April 2.
