Forestry firefighters joined more than 40 members of the Rural Fire Service as flames threatened three state forests in the area overnight.
Two fires were initially reported within a kilometer of each other near Lower Middle Road at 11am on Wednesday. At 6pm firefighters attended another fire Currawarna at tip that later escaped into the state forest, burning more than 30 hectares of land.
RFS operations officer Brad Stewart said police were now investigating the cause of the pyro-spate.
“While responding to those fires, we found multiple ignitions in those areas impacted on Matong and Kockibitoo state forests,” Mr Stewart said. “If anyone’s aware of anything they should report it to police.”
Mr Stewart praised the tireless work of firefighters as they worked through the night and into Thursday.
“Volunteers did a smashing job at getting in there and getting on top of them,” he said. “It got busy.”
