Trainor took the driving responsibilities from suspended Sydney trainer Blake`Fitzpatrick and enjoyed immediate success.
First he led all the way as Maxentius led all the way to win the $10,000 feature for the three-year-old colts and geldings.
Maxentius ($5.40) had to sustain plenty of pressure throughout the Derby but still found plenty of the finish to defeat $2.60 favourite Our Triple Play by 1.5 metres.
After coming fifth in a NSW Derby heat, Trainor was impressed with his resilience.
“When he found the front he got a bit keen when I had to open him up a couple of times,” Trainor said.
“He did pretty well to fend them off, he probably had every right to stop so I was really happy with him."
The Kiwi then drove Shez Sugarsweet to victory in the Oaks as the filly made it three wins from three starts this season.
Well suited by the hot tempo set by the leaders, Shez Sugarsweet ($3.20 fav) went on to defeat Simply Clever ($3.60) by 3.8 metres.
Shez Sugarsweet has now won five of her last six starts and Trainor believes there is more in store for the daughter of Somebeachsomewhere.
“She has got really good speed so as soon as they went hard and she got a cart up into it, I was happy to go up alone but when Reece come out in front of me and she had a back to follow, she was always going to be hard to beat,” he said.
“Down the track she is going to be a filly very good filly.”
