The 54-year old allegedly made modifications to the light aviation craft that caused engine failure, 800 metres from the rural airport.
Witnesses rushed to the scene as the single-seat aircraft crash-landed in a paddock off Wee Jasper Road.
Tumut-based paramedic John Larter said the man had extracted himself from the plane and was later treated at the scene for possible spinal damage and a possible pelvic fracture.
The pilot was transported to Wagga hospital after 5pm.
