Zardalu made a winning start to his career with a strong victory in the Book Your Wedding At The MTC C,G&E Maiden Plate (1300m).
Long-time Gundagai owner-breeder Sandy Tait was on track to watch Zardalu begin his racing career in the right fashion.
Zardalu is out of Australian Oaks winner Wild Iris and is a half brother to group winner Zanbagh.
Gundagai trainer David Blundell has often broke horses in and pre-trained for the Tait family and was charged with the duty of bringing Zardalu to the races.
Blundell said the future is bright for Zardalu.
“I thought he’d take some beating but I also thought it would be too short for him,” Blundell said.
“He’ll go to John Thompson’s at Sydney now I’d say.”
Zardalu spent time with Thompson last preparation, where he did not reach the track, before being sent home for a spell.
Zardalu ($7.00) hit the front early in the straight for Michael Heagney, but fought strongly to hold out the fast-finishing Flying Fragments ($4.00) in a photo.
Another impressive maiden winner at Wagga was the Graham Hulm-trained Bennelong Dancer ($1.70), who scored by two lengths in the Book Your Wedding At The MTC F&M (1300m).
That was the three-year-old filly’s second start after running an eye catching second behind Happy Pilgram at Wagga on debut earlier in the month.
