The 18-year-old walked free on Tuesday afternoon despite allegations he physically lashed out at police during his apprehension on Monday night.

Court documents also revealed he may seek to have the charges dismissed under Section 34 of the Mental Health (Forensic Provisions) Act.  

Detectives raided a unit in Kooringal about 11pm and arrested the teen – who was asleep on a couch – after he failed to turn up to court.

When they tried to haul the offender inside Wagga police station, he allegedly bit one officer’s arm and kicked him in the knee. 

The teen was taken to a holding cell where police claim he then punched a custody officer in the face. 

While incarcerated, he allegedly screamed and threatened to self harm. 

He was previously due to face Wagga Local Court on a raft of charges, including five counts of assaulting police, two counts of common assault and two counts of intimidation. 

In one past incident, the teen is alleged to have spat on one police officer and headbutted another.

Inspector Peter Robertson said the offender was very well known to police. 

“For an 18-year-old, he’s building quite the resume of offences,” he said. 

“We do not yet know if substances were a factor, but it is extremely possible given his age and this type of behaviour.”

He revealed both of the officers only sustained minor injuries and will return to their shifts in the coming days. 

“It’s extremely fortunate that they’ve just been knocked around a bit but they’re both okay,” Inspector Roberston said. 

Five police have now been assaulted in Wagga in 2017, sparking fears criminals are becoming more violent. 

Superintendent Bob Noble said it was horrific that sons, daughters, mothers and fathers were being bashed while on the job.

“These kind of random and sudden violent attacks leave an undeniable mark on someone’s physical and emotional well-being,” he said.

“They may be police, but they are human beings with families and lives.”

He will appear before Wagga Local Court again on March 7.
