Senior Sergeant David Cook implored parents to stop attaching name tags to the outside of school bags.
Senior Sergeant Cook said the popular practice exacerbated stranger danger.
“Someone unsavoury can read the child’s name on the tag and use it to convince the kid that mum or dad sent them,” he said.
“It would be better to put the child’s name inside the bag and attach a flag or ribbon on the outside to identify it.”
Busabout school liaison officer Don Gregor was on hand to teach the kids bus etiquette.
“We teach them not to run around the front or back of the bus because it’s dangerous with oncoming traffic,” Mr Gregor said.
“The driver can’t necessarily see these little guys when they’re in front of the bus.
“We encourage kids to remain at the bus stop until their parents pick them up, not wander off.”
