The day may have been a unique event on the city’s social calendar, but according to event organiser Koala Jones lawn mower racing is a sport quickly growing in momentum.
“I have a mate of mine down in Victoria who is fully into proper lawn mower racing and they go around and do it for charities,” he explained in the aftermath of Saturday’s fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis.
As a less expensive alternative to the bright lights of the racing circuits, Mr Jones said it was no wonder the sport was becoming popular, especially after witnessing the excitement first-hand.
“After watching yesterday it is just a great little sport, a great spectacle,” he said. “There was one young one, he was only a tiny little fellow, about five, and he was right into it racing along because it is good fun.”
Mr Jones said while it had been a terrific day for the hundreds of people who attended it was the funds and awareness raised for Cystic Fibrosis Australia making the six months of organisation worthwhile.
“We had one young lady here with Cystic Fibrosis, and we all got a photo with her on the lawn mower,” he said.
“It was a good moment to bring it all back home, seeing how much she and everyone appreciated what we had put on. “It really gets to you and it makes it all worthwhile.”
