AFL will head into uncharted waters this weekend when they hold the opening round of their inaugural women’s competition.
Lawton, who hails from Ganmain, will line up for the Giants when they open their season with a trip to Adelaide to take on the Crows.
The 22-year-old is pumped for the big moment.
“I can’t wait,” Lawton said.
“It’s been such a long pre-season and we’ve been training so hard for this first game.
“I can’t wait for flying out with the team, team meetings, all the preparation and then once we’re out on the field, it will be game on, but I really can’t wait.”
Lawton was picked up by the Giants in the AFLW Draft last October. She has since been transferred through the Army to Holsworthy in Sydney to allow her the chance to train and play with GWS.
Lawton has found the entire experience amazing.
“It’s been crazy, absolutely out of this world,” she said.
“To be finally playing this weekend, flying out for Adelaide on Friday, is pretty overwhelming. At the same time, the club makes sure we keep a level head.”
Lawton was drafted as a tall utility but the Giants used her as a key defender in last weekend’s ‘eye opening’ trial game against Brisbane Lions.
The Giants are rated the outsiders of the competition in betting markets, but that is something Lawton finds a little hard to fathom.
“It’s hard to gauge because it’s the first competition, so I’m not sure where they’re getting their stats from,” she said.
“We’re going to come out with all jets firing against Adelaide and we’re definitely going to give them a good run for their money. We’re hoping for a win and to let everyone know that we’re here to play, we’re not mucking around.
“At the end of the day, we’re all here to win a premiership. That’s what it comes down to.”
The Giants meet Adelaide at Thebarton Oval at 5.05pm and the game will be televised on Fox Footy.
