It is believed the Wagga Shakespeare Club is the longest continuously running Shakespeare reading club of its kind in the world.
The club started in 1904 and while the name and rules might have changed, the premise has not.
Club member Anne Brasil formerly worked at Gateway Bookshop and as an English teacher.
She had plenty of members come through the doors to find more information about a play they were studying and wanted to join the club.
“I enjoy it,” Mrs Brasil said.
“It’s really awakened a love of Shakespeare and I’ve met some lovely friends.”
Member Jen Thompson wrote The Shakespeare Ladies: A history of the Wagga Wagga Shakespeare Club as a history of the club’s formation.
The club held a celebration last year for the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.
The Wagga Shakespeare Club meets on the second Wednesday of the month in the Wagga City Library at 2pm.
Members take two meetings to read a play and another one or two to discuss it.
Four plays are read per year and members also watch accompanying films, if available.
