But a call from above saw him study theology, leading to a career in the church that ended when civil war sent Mr Moi and his family to Wagga as refugees.
On Thursday morning, Mr Moi became one of a growing number of Charles Sturt University graduates in his immediate family, receiving his Master of Social Work.
“I have changed direction but I am still committed to my faith,” Mr Moi said.
“We’re very grateful for what we’ve been given and now we’re trying to give back as well.”
Mr Moi said he was looking to join his children in working for the betterment of the Wagga community.
