Narrandera’s six-year wait to host another game is set to end when the AFL releases their 2017 pre-season fixture in coming days.
Narrandera Shire Council applied to AFL to host a pre-season game and it is understood they have been successful for the first time since 2010.
AFL NSW-ACT state manager – partnerships, diversity and major projects – Joseph La Posta was unable to confirm or comment until the fixture is released.
Narrandera Shire Council mayor Neville Kschenka confirmed an application had been made but said they had not received any confirmation as to whether they had been successful.
Kschenka did say Narrandera Sportsground had dried out considerably and was now in much better condition than when it was overlooked for the Riverina League grand final in September.
Narrandera Shire Council is currently building coaches boxes at the Sportsground, that will be ready in time for the prospective game.
The switch back to Narrandera ends Wagga’s run of AFL pre-season games.
Robertson Oval has hosted games three times over the past four years.
Collingwood played North Melbourne at Robertson Oval in March this year as part of an agreement between AFL NSW-ACT and Wagga City Council.
Lavington Sportsground in Albury is also expected to host a pre-season game in 2017, believed to be featuring St Kilda in March.
