MI operations manager Alan Shea said controlled volumes of water was being released into the Lower Mirrool Creek floodway to help smooth creek height fluctuations as a precautionary measure.

“We are working with flood management agencies and landholders to monitor and assist with the movement of creek water,” Mr Shea said.

MI urged concerned landholders to contact council for information on the flood situation.

Mr Shea urged motorists to take extra care while driving and notify council of any hazards from flooding.

“Please avoid MI’s infrastructure as any flood flows may present an increased hazard,” he said.

Mr Shea said MI’s drainage infrastructure was designed for irrigation run-off, not flood waters.

This meant you could not accelerate drainage into MI’s drainage network.

“Customers are not permitted to cut into our drains (to get water off faster) or to drain into the supply system,” Mr Shea said.

“MI will be working hard to improve opportunities for customers to accelerate drainage (where site circumstances allow) once the event is declared over.”

Mr Shea urged residents to help MI by reporting any drainage blockages or unusual behaviour.
