Kay Catanzariti made headlines earlier this year after the building company her son worked for had charges surrounding his death dropped.
Maintenance company Schwing Australia had faced a $3 million fine and NSW engineer Phillip James O'Rourke faced a fine of up to $300,000 and a maximum of five years' jail. Both the company and Mr O'Rourke had pleaded not guilty.
Now, Mrs Catanzariti’s push for a senate inquiry into construction deaths has seen her meet with lawmakers in a bid to stop it from happening again.
“It was interesting meeting Pauline (Hanson),” Mrs Catanzariti said. “She listens and absorbs what you’re saying and the rest of her team took notes and asked questions. But I told them not to forget where they were from or who put them there.”
While the four One Nation senators didn’t make any promises to support the bid for an inquiry when they met with Mrs Catanzariti on Tuesday, they weren’t the only irons in the fire.
“Nick Xenophon’s office has helped guide me, which has been really good,” she said. “I’ve also called Derryn Hinch’s office and I’m waiting to hear back from them.”
Michael Garrels, a Queenslander whose son was killed at work before he’d even received his first pay, joined forces with Mrs Catanzariti in April and they met with Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and Shadow Workplace Minister Brendan O’Connor to discuss a possible inquiry.
“It needs to happen,” Mr Garrels said. “These cases haven’t been dealt with the way the average Australian would expect. We need to take these people to task and punish them appropriately.”
Mrs Catanzariti said she believed Tuesday’s meeting was a “step in the right direction”.
“I honestly feel they listened,” she said. “They want things to change for the Australian people and I believe that’s what they’ll do.”
One Nation has not responded to requests for comment.
