The NSW government is currently reviewing licence arrangements which could bring the state in line with Victoria and the ACT.

Melbourne-based escort, "Amanda", is currently in Wagga and said it's surprising the moves haven't been made earlier.

"Victoria has a much cleaner sex industry than NSW because it's licensed," she said.

"We get quite a shock in NSW at who's allowed to work."

Brothels are currently legal in NSW and only require council planning approval and escorts are unregulated.

The government review proposes three options, including brothels and sex workers registering or having a licence.

They may also bring in criminal checks before issuing a licence and charge annual fees.

But Wagga escort "Zabella" said strict rules won't impact those already flouting the law.

"Wagga has a lot of funny things go on ... I hear around the traps that it's quite bad," she said. 

"It's a gossip town."

Other concerns raised by Wagga prostitutes include privacy and tax.

They say having their name officially recorded as working in the sex industry is worrying.

"We are condemned by society," said one escort, who did not wish to be named.

Wagga City Council is the authorising body for brothels to establish and zoning means they can only operate in industrial areas.

NSW Health is responsible for health checks, but escorts say this is more in theory than practice.

A sex industry advocacy group, Scarlet Alliance, supports the proposed option of not including registration or licences.

Instead, greater scrutiny in planning approval and improved sharing of information between NSW regulators would be imposed.
