However, beating Premier League 3 team Gladesville Ryde Magic is not an impossibility according to Wagga coach Andrew Douglas.
“I think they’re capable [of winning],” Douglas said.
“On their day they will beat most teams.”
Their confidence has taken a hammering of late, with two consecutive State League losses in a row and a bitter tousle to progress through to Round Six of the FFA Cup.
But a number of contributing factors affecting their form in recent weeks will not come into play on Wednesday.
“Saturday we were just flat after travelling Friday and waiting six hours to play the game,” Douglas said.
“At the Anzac Day game it was fatigue-based after playing State League on Saturday.
“We have an opportunity to turn it all around.”
On Tuesday night at training Douglas will direct a meeting to flesh out the team’s aims for the season ahead.
“We’ve set a precedent, we know our best our worst what we need to improve on and maintain,” Douglas said.
“It takes the focus off directly winning, week-in, week-out.”
The result on Wednesday night is in the player’s hands according to Douglas, whose focus for the season has primarily been on the State League games.
“They take as much out of this as they want,” he said.
The Wanderers are one of just two State League teams remaining in the FFA Cup knockout competition.
“It’s the luck of the draw, but in saying that we’ve had two double-headers where they’ve managed to succeed,” Douglas said.
The squad will experiment with a new strategy on Wednesday.
“We’ll experiment with getting a bit more support upfront, at times we’ve been lacking a bit of drive with the transition from defence to attack,” Douglas said.
“I want them to move the ball fairly quickly.
“It will be a fairly fast, free-flowing game of football.”
Calum MacCormick is expected to make his debut, having recovered from an injury.
Supporters are encouraged to attend the game, which starts at 4pm on Wednesday at Gissing Oval.
