The quietly-spoken double trap shooter was announced as a member of the Australian Olympic team on Friday.
Willett, 20, is part of a new generation of shooters ready to don the green and gold.
The Corowa-based athlete said his selection was the satisfying result of months of hard work.
“I'm feeling pretty good, although it hasn't really sunk in yet,” he said.
“I've been waiting for this day for a long time.
“I've had to sacrifice a lot to get to this point, it's satisfying that all the hard days of training have paid off.”
Willett, who won the Sport Albury-Wodonga Young Achiever of the Year award earlier this year, is the number nine-ranked double trap shooter in the world.
Recent performances, including 3rd place at the most recent ISSF World Cup event in Cyprus, have the 20-year-old in medal contention.
But Willett isn't getting worked up about the occasion.
“The main thing is to try and keep the same routine I would for any other event,” he said.
“We've got a great squad of shooters going over, a few like me who are at the Olympics for the first time and some who have competed a number of times.”
There's no rest for the rising star, who has already jetted across to America to train with them before a test event at the Rio venue.
“It'll be good to get a feel for the venue and conditions over there,” Willett said.
“Russell Mark has coached me a bit, he's been to the Olympics before and I'll be trying to follow his advice and not get overwhelmed.”
I've sacrificed so much to get to where I am, all the hard days training have paid off.
