John Shand from the Sydney Morning Herald had this to say about the show: "If your heart is sick or just needs warming, go and see this play. If you are a baby boomer who doesn't understand your grandchildren or are from Gen Y and, like, really weirded out by your grandparents, go and see this play. If you simply love theatre, go and see this play."
Twenty-one-year-old Leo rocks up unannounced at the Manhattan apartment of his 91-year-old Jewish grandmother Vera.
Having broken up with his girlfriend and cycled across the country, he needs a place to crash for the night, no questions asked.
But Vera – prickly, stubborn and sharp as a tack – isn’t about to let him off that easily.
As an overnight couch-surf turns into an extended stay, 4000 Miles unearths a surprising parallel between these two generations in this emotionally compelling drama.
With disarming frankness and surprising candour, the two negotiate social potholes and trace emotional fault lines that link them to a painful family history.
From one of America’s brightest playwrights, Amy Herzog, this compassionate and unsentimental play explores the funny, frustrating, and ultimately life-changing relationship between a grandson learning to face his life, and a grandmother who is starting to forget hers.
Richard Nelson said of Amy “She has great, great facility for dialogue. It’s clean, it’s simple, it’s evocative, it’s witty. It’s alive and easily spoken. Very, very actable. That’s a given talent.”
4000 Miles was originally produced by the Lincoln Center Theatre, New York City in 2011.
The list of awards and nominations for the show is impressive.
- Finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
- Winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play
- Named Time Magazine 's #1 Play or Musical of 2012
- Nominated for two Sydney Theatre Awards 2013 (Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actress in an Independent Production)
