Already boasting some of the competition’s most exciting young players, Tigers have added more youth with Carroll and O’Connell signing for the upcoming season.
Carroll is no stranger to Robertson Oval, having played juniors there before bursting into the senior team, while O’Connell makes the switch from Hume League club Osborne.
Wagga Tigers captain-coach Shaun Campbell is rapt to have another two promising footballers join the club.
“They will fit in pretty well with the rest of our young blokes,” Campbell said.
“They’re going to be really keen and enthusiastic, you can’t really beat it.”
Carroll made his senior debut at Tigers as a 15-year-old and went on to play 32 senior games at the club and returned 39 goals.
He spent the 2014 season with Murray Bushrangers, NSW-ACT and Albury Tigers, where he played a handful of senior games and a reserve grade premiership.
Carroll moved to Melbourne last year where he spent the season with Eastern Football League division one club Blackburn for four senior games and 17 in reserves.
Campbell plans to use Carroll, 19, across half-forward.
“Hopefully he’ll play up forward,” he said.
“He’s a pretty good grab and a decent size so hopefully he’ll slot in somewhere across half-forward there.
“Before Christmas he was training with Port Melbourne so he’s in pretty good nick.”
Campbell is very excited about the addition of O’Connell, who has already played 33 senior games at Osborne at 20.
“He will be really handy for us,” Campbell said.
“I haven’t seen him play but what I’ve heard is enough for me.
“I reckon he’ll be my utility but will probably play between the midfield and half-back. He will be really dangerous across half-back, he’s quick and is a pretty good kick but could fit in anywhere for me.”
The addition of Carroll and O’Connell helps cover the disappointment of Sean Ellis’ decision to stay in Canberra.
Tigers have now added in Campbell, Dale Walker, Rob Tuohey, Carroll and O’Connell, while losing Matt Rava, Pat Delaney, Angus Durnan, Xavier Brennan and Alex Reilly.
Tigers returned to the training track last week with trial games against Tuggeranong on March 19 at Maher Oval and Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes on April 2.
